I am currently a US citizen from California, residing in Sweden. I currently reside with my Swedish husband of 10 years and my 9 year old son. We have been living in Sweden for a year and a half now. Prior to that we resided in California. My son was born in California, as were my husband and I married there.

Currently, we are in the beginning stages of a divorce. Does anyone have any advice for me? Will my son and I be stuck in Sweden? Should I hire a lawyer as soon as possible? Are there any websites that may be of use to me? I am terrified and confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are your son are US citizens, they what is stopping you from getting on an airplane and coming home? As far as international laws are concerned I am not an expert on that, but as a US citizen you certainly have the right to return to this country with your child. Does your husband want you and/or the child to stay in Sweden? Or is he glad to be rid of you?
