This might be a dumb question but hey, I'm hanging by a thread on the end of my rope. How often do people (in love) who break up get back together?

I was with my boyfriend for a year and a half, we broke up for two months, and just got back together this week. I think we are doing great.
It depends on the reasons for the break up. And many many other aspects.
What is the story?

On this forum, not a lot get back together successfully. But depending on the reasons, many do in real life, especially those that are willing to work together to solve their problems, to the benefit of them both. Relationships are hard work, and no one can hold them together alone, it takes them both.

She might go out there and find that there is a whole new world for her.. she might also go out there and realize that it was a big mistake.. That could take a week a month or even years.Any time I ever had an ex coming back was after she had a few failed relationships with guys..
If you continue to hope, that implies that you're waiting for her to come back and seeing as though the circumstances of such a situation differ for each individual, waiting is the biggest mistake you can do.. Theres a whole new world out there for you too, explore it.. and if ever she decides to come back then you can start thinking about "what if's"..
I hate to break it to you man but it could be a long time.. avoid contact with her and start focusing on healing the wounds.. I know its hard, we all have to do it at least once, I'm going through it now and it makes it even worse that my ex continually talks to me - but I got help from here and made the decision that I would stop replying and hopefully she'll stop leading me on and I'll get over this hurdle.

She wants to see what else is out there?? Doesn't that tell you something?
I wouldn't wait around for someone who thinks your second best.

That's better than what I would have said... Correct.
She's telling you that she doesn't want to be with you. Don't wait around to get hurt.

My ex-boyfriend (ex of a week, which is why I'm on this forum) broke up with me last year when we both went on our semesters abroad. He wanted to feel like he wasn't tied down while exploring a new country (and potentially new ladies?) and we kept communication going and we visited each other. Afterwards, we got back together. He broke up with me last week for the same reason as before. He's going abroad and wants to pursue a life alone.
So yes, technically we did get back together, then and twice before when I broke up with him for other reasons for about a week's time each. After the time apart, we stayed together for seven months and it was all good. But the time I spent waiting around for him during that sort-of-break-up was miserable. Incredibly confusing and lonely. At the time, I felt that I preferred the scraps of the relationship to nothing at all. But it was extremely difficult.
Does it work out? Sometimes. The choice is yours and either way, it's not going to be easy. You can't change your partner's mind (so incredibly unfortunately). A break may be OK. A "break to see what else is out there" may be OK. But, a break "to see WHO else is out there" is possibly a bad sign.
