I am currently working for the Federal government in Canada for at least the next 2-5 years. Am I liable for paying GA state taxes? I called our payroll office and they told me I didn't have to pay them while I was not physically living in GA. I still have a home there that I am renting to someone and my car is registered there and I pay all of those taxes but what about the actual state taxes?

Some years ago I lived/worked in Canada for I think it was 10 months, also for the Feds. I'm in NYS and I believe the tax question was by NYS/Canadian agreement. Every State has different laws. My permanent residence remained "here" and so I paid NYS taxes but I believe the Canadian taxes were an offset - or the other way around.

As I recall I got some extra pay incentive in part because of the tax situation.

I believe I would ask a real, live accountant in order to be 100% sure.

(How's that for a vague answer?)
