Hello, my sister just died last month. She and my brother in law have been separated for about 8 months and she was living with me. At the time of her death, she had a few credit cards open and had been paying on them. However, upon her death they sent a bill to my niece for full payment. Can you tell me what to do on this matter? We live in Texas.

Ok, just quoting UK because we had this with a family member. DO NOT MAKE ANY PAYMENT, that's accepting responsibility. The likelihood is that your sister may have taken out payment protection but they'd rather get the money back from family. Trying it on, is the term we use over here.

Death pretty much ends the debts by the debtor. After all he /she can't be taken to court. But the debts are pretty much a responibility of the executor or administrator of the estate to be paid from property following burial expenses.

Yes, do not make any payments or agree that you owe anything, send the bill back to them with a copy of the debt certificate
