We have lived in our newly built home for three years now. Recently we have had huge amounts of rain and snow. You can just hear the water rushing through our sump pump however it has made a banging noise like the sound of closing a door very gently. It has slowed as the ground is a little dryer. I have never heard this in prior years until now. Is there something that needs fixed? Thank you!

I doubt there is anything that needs to be fixed, alliandbill...

Sounds like the check valve is doing its job and that you are hearing it now as a result of the increased frequency that the sump pump is turning on.

When pump turns on and pumps water out there is an inline check valve that stops the water that is pumped up at end of pump cycle from falling back into the sump pit... reduces cycling.

That check valve can make a thudding/knock type sound when it closes... depends on how the pipe is hung, how close the check valve is to pump, and the particular kind of check valve used.

At this point, sounds like all is OK to me.

Let me know what you think... Mark

Thank you for your help. You were right. The sound has now stopped all together since we have had some dry weather.
