Hello everyone, and thank you in advance for viewing and responding to this post.

I have had sleeping problems for the last few years, however its gotten uncontrollable lately. For example, its 6:25am now and I haven't slept yet. I'm doing this every night, and then I'm not functional for school. Despite the fact I'm physically and mentally exhausted, I still cannot sleep.

Sleeping pills don't work, I have even overdosed and taken 16 pills and it only made me drowsy. My parents aren't really all that interested, they just blame it on my 'body clock' and tell me to go to sleep.

How can I get back into a regular sleep pattern? I want to sleep, but its ridiculous when you're staring at a ceiling for 5-6 hours and still not falling asleep.

Please help!

Thanks,
Louis.

Kind of, there's always something that's going on but it never bothers me throughout the day, only once I stop doing stuff and lay down then my brain don't stop, but sometimes I've laid there for hours with only the odd thought and nothing happening. Its just very frustrating.

Thanks,
Louis.

I've tried the music thing and found it makes things worse, it wakes me up once I doze of from sheer exhaustion. It may be a visit to the dr's but, sleeping tablets don't work well, and they are only short term. I've read about cognitive therapy, but unsure if it will work because I'm a psychology student and know how it works.

Thanks,
Louis.

Could it be that your serotonin, dopamine or melatonin levels are out of balance?

I don't know, I've never had tests for anything. I just had sleeping tablets thrown at me, and they didn't work. I think I may need a trip to the dr, I have had 3 hours sleep in the last 96 hours. (4 days) I'm exhausted and didn't get one minute sleep last night.

Thanks,
Louis.

If you go to doc ,don't accept an offer of sleeping tabs ,maybe time to see a specialist

I will have to pursue someone more specialized.

Insomnia is a pain to deal with. Have you tried paying attention to your sleep habits and winding down in the evenings?

Have you tried meditation? That can be great for relaxing the mind and body before sleep. Try a relaxing drink such as chamomile too.

This article has some useful tips on How to sleep better (http://howtobeatinsomnia.com/how_to_sleep_better.html)

Hi Louis,

Have you considered alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hypnosis or even brainwave entrainment?

Meditation and progressive relaxation can help your mind and body unwind, but it's always easier said than done.

Here's some info on brainwave entrainment if you've never heard about it How to Beat Insomnia - Sleep disorders - Chronic insomnia » Blog Archive » Brainwave Entrainment And Meditation (http://howtobeatinsomnia.com/blogs/2008/02/27/brainwave-entrainment-and-meditation/)

The only thing that I have found is melatonin pills. The body naturally makes melatonin and when there is a lack of it you can't get to sleep. I stumbled onto melatonin pills about 2 years ago after having suffered insomnia for years. I take 3 little melatonin pills and place them under my tongue. Within 30 minutes I am out like a light and sleep pretty good at night. If for some reason I don't go to sleep right away I take one more pill. Here is the link of the online place I buy my melatonin. It must be the sublingual (under tongue) type to properly get into your system.
Melatonin 1mg Sublingual-Peppermint (http://www.vitaminlife.com/product-exec/PNAME/Melatonin_1mg_Sublingual_Peppermint/product_id/6194)

You could also get a book called The Miracle of Melatonin by a doctor. It is available on the internet. He did his own research on melatonin not too long ago. He found that just 3mg of melatonin cured a lot of people of insomnia. Your body is out of whack due to the lack of melatonin.

I tried everything under the sun to try and go to sleep with no avail. Everything mentioned above did not work for me, i.e. muisc, meditation, etc etc. I wasted my money on tapes, cd's, books, etc. When I read the melatonin book and tried the melatonin I got the first good night's sleep I ever had in literally years and years - try 25 years! It is NOT habit forming and causes no unwanted addictions or bad side effects as this is something your own body makes. I don't take sleeping pills as they are too expensive and need a dr's rx and I don't like the side effects the next day.

Hello! When I mess my sleeping pattern I usually skip a night sleep. Like if you can't sleep today from 11 pm you should not sleep at all until tomorrow night. It's not a medical breakthrough but it works for me. Hope it helps! Best luck!
