Hello Atlanta tax expert :)

Hope your doing well? Could you please clarify the following questions with regards to my federal tax return for year 2007.

1. I'm a citizen of India currently employed in the US on H1-B visa since Oct. 2007. I've been in the US since, Aug 2004 on F1 visa. I have received 1099 form from the US bank towards the interest that I have earned in 2007. Is this taxable for NRI? My I-94 still is in the F1 status since, I haven't got my H1B stamped.

2. I purchased a laptop which I use for both office and personal work. Can I claim this under office expenses? If so, how do I claim the expenses towards the laptop purchase?

3. I make monthly donations to UNICEF and would like to know if I could claim the money spent towards donation?

4. I'm currently renting an accommodation for living. Can I claim rental expense as a deduction? How would I do this?

Thank you and look forward to your earliest response.

I know that the donation to unicef is tax-deductible, but renting an accommodation is not. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but those are the ones I know about. Good luck!

You will file nonresident tax return. Your interest income is taxable if you have H1-B income.
Car for personal use, rent are not deductible. Does your employer require you to have a laptop, then you can claim a part of it, else no.
