I was arrested in 1988 for a misdemeanor bad check. I paid the check and all fees and the case was dismissed. I have absolutely nothing else on my criminal record. This was 20 years ago, but I am still being denied employment because of it. Is there any way to have it removed? If so, how do I obtain the correct forms to file and with which court? I do not have the money to hire a lawyer

If the case was dismissed without a conviction then it shouldn't be on your record. Have you checked your record to see what's there?

If there is a conviction on record you will need to petition the court to get it expunged.

Hello dj:

There are no forms for this. Write a letter to the court where you were convicted. Ask them to consider your letter a pettion for expungment. Send it certified, return receipt requested.

20 years ago for a misdemeanor charge that was dismissed? I can't see that hindering you from gaining employment. Have you gone to the police department and pulled a copy of your criminal background to see just what it says? Do that and see what is on your record. It's free. Just go in person, present your ID and request a copy of your own record. They will give it to you.
