I am a mother of 3 who has been married to a controlling and possessive man for 9 1/2 years. I have a job but he insists I give him my pay stub and every penny I make to contribute to household. He has told me if we split up he will never let me have the children that I would be dead before that would ever happen. I have to depend on my family to give us groceries to feed the children and donated clothing to send them to school. I NEED OUT but every time I ask around about divorce and getting my own rental house people say I need a lawyer. Well I can't get a lawyer when I have NO MONEY! I have called state funded organizations and they can't help until I live at a different address than he does. Can't do that without money. So am I just destined to poverty and abuse for the rest of my life or am I missing information about financial and legal help that won't cost me?

You should contact the local Battered and Abused Women's Shelter. They may be able to help you physically move into one of their safe houses and get away from this man. Do you have any documented physical abuse against him with the local police depts? Try and remember the exact dates these incidents happened so they can get copies of these reports for you if you don't have copies. They are there to help you get away from this man. Please call them.
