Chlorophyll in the plant's leaf allows absorption of energy from sunlight, and the plant uses this energy, water from it's roots, and carbon dioxide from the air to produce oxygen and simple sugars. These sugars are than used to produce cellulose and hemicellulose to grow new cell walls : i.e. the mass of the plant increases.
