I have an electronic thermostat by UPM/ Nova installed on a mid-efficiency Temp Star natural gas furnace. The filters are new and fce has had a tune-up in November. The furnace is cycling 5-6 times per hour even in night time set back temperatures. In checking the manual for the themostat, it says it was Factory Set at 5-6 times for gas furnaces. As an option, it states that I can reduce the cycles or shut them off completely. If they are shut off, the themostat will operate in turning on the heat when the room temperature gets to one degree below the set themostat temperature and run until it gets to one degree above the setting.
My question is if I want to have an economical and efficient heating system:

Should I leave the Factory settings of 5-6 cycles or reduce it or shut it off completely?

Please help.

5-6 cycles are standard. Try the other setting and see how it does. Comfort and noise should also be a considerqation.

The other lower settings in the manual are for Boiler fces and the other higher settings are for electric fces. How low can I go?

I just said Try the other setting You can always turn it back. This kind of stuff happens when you have junk thermostats. Try a Honeywell or White Rodgers.

Your energy savings actually comes more from a set back during the day when you are not there. There can be a very minimal savings at night but most folks do not want to sleep in 65 degrees dry air.
