I had a plumber in to redo my drain line. He said that because the vent is on the outside wall of the house it is not to code and must be moved into the house more so that it is not on the edge of the roof. I have never heard of anything like that. Does anybody know how far away from the edge of a roof a vent must be?

This guy is just looking for work. Tell him to forget it. Many vents are on outside walls but they can be changed by adding two 90 degree elbows inside the attic before it reaches the roof. If it ain't broke don't pay to have it fixed. I'd keep what I have if there is no sewer gas problem in the home.

Just checked the International Plumbing Code and the only thing I see code wise is the height above the roof, proximity to any windows or intakes and the distance to any neighboring structures, which is 5 foot minimum. Nothing about it not being allowed in an exterior wall.

Amricca is right... no codes saying can't run vent on the outside of the house as long as the pipe terminates above the roof at least 18" to 24" above the roof line. There are restrictions in terms of windows, especially skylight type windows that open, but as was stated by Amricca... most requirements are met if vent at least 5 feet away from any window.

Permdog... does this vent run above the roof.. Or does it terminate under the eaves..? This vent pipe we are talking about is on the OUTSIDE of house...yes? Plumbing inspectors frown on running vent pipes outside of house... but will allow as long as rules are met... Let us know... Mark
