I have a Carrier heat pump. The outside condenser is making an constant loud grinding noise. The fan is running fine with no problems and I checked the pressures with gauges and they are fine. It is cooling fine inside the home.
What could be causing this noise? I am concern the compressor is going out? Is there anything else that could cause this noise? Is there anything I can do to prevent a complete break down?

Can you determine exactly what or where the noise is coming from? If it's the compresser doubt there is anything you can do but wait till it goes out and replace, I`ve seen compressors make a noise for a couple- three years before they give up the ghost

Also,how old is it? With the cost of replacing the entire unit (everything high effecient) might want to look at replacing the compressor before a total burn-out happens
