I live in a old house. The original rough in is 14 inches. I am finding it is very hard to find a toilet to meet the new space I have for a toilet. Can I replace a 14 inch rough in toilet with a 12 inch rough in without changing any plumbing?

The answer is yes assuming you have some play with the water supply line to the tank. Like Ballenger said... you can swap out a 14" rough toilet with a 12" rough toilet without changing the piping at all.

Only problem is that will leave you with 2-3 inches of space between finished wall and the back of the toilet tank.

There are a couple brands available at most home supply stores. At home supply, will probably need to order the bowl/tank as this rough in is not usually stocked (takes 2-3 weeks)... but check just in case.

A local plumbing supply house may be another option where they might actually carry one in stock (in my area, they always have 1 of these in stock at all times.

American Standard is great toilet (see ballenger website).
Kohler is great toilet.

And TOTO is also very good (plumbing supply house only.. usually).

Try to find a 14" rough toilet..will look better. And remember that when ordering your new toilet... you need to order a toilet seat separately most of the time!

Thanks for the quick responses. The problem I have is that I can only fit a 16 inch tank in the space I have available for the toilet. Every 14 in rough in all have a bigger tank. I have been to Home Depot, Lowe's and several plumbing supply stores in my area. No one has a 14 in rough bowl with a 16 inch tank. I will probably go with the 12 inch rough in toilet and maybe put some kind of cabinet behind the toilet to hide the gap.

With many brands of toilets you can swap the tank from one to the bowl of another, you buy them separately in most cases. Are you talking 16" tall or 16" wide?

The tank needs to be 16 inch wide with a 14 in rough in bowl. It is hard to find a 14 in rough in bowl with that small of a tank. Most of the tanks I am finding are 20 inches and above in width. The biggest problem I find a small enough tank but then the bolts don't line up with the bowl.

Bolt holes will usually line up better if you stick with the same brand toilet/tank. These are 14" rough in toilets and I think they may help you. Eljer Patriots are not high end but function great and can be bought at home centers Like Menards and Home Depot. Bob, NY said it had to fit within a 16" width... Elger looks wider then that (let me know if I am wrong about that).

NY...Toto makes some 14" rough toilets that fit your criteria:

Model #cst804s (see pic.) may do it. It is two piece as you can see. Toto also makes a couple of 1 piece toilets that work in this case.. but expensive!

Toto is big in my area... has great flush! Be clear that the 14" rough will be more expensive, but overall is best thing to do if you can.

You can get an offset flange. Even if the flange is in concrete, you can chip along the back of the pipe after removing the original flange and chip just deep enough to sort of mold around the angle of the offset flange therefore placing it flush on the floor.

You have options here.
1) You can install a 2" offset flange but I only use offset flanges as a last resort.
2) Install a 12" bow. But that would leave your tank out too far from the wall. ( You could always build a shelf to take up the room) **OR**
