I am from NJ and going to school in Washington DC. Had income working part time in DC and also in NJ during summer vacation. Where do I file for resident and non-resident taxes? According to DC people, since I lived there more than 183 days while going to school, I am considered a resident there. But my home address is in NJ and I am also registered to vote in NJ.

Please help... I am lost and the deadline for filing is coming soon. Thanks in advance for any help...

You MUST file a NJ tax return as a NJ resident.

In order to file a DC tax return, you must LIVE in DC, so no worry there. Virtually every state exempts students who do not normally live in their states from residency-time tests. I suspect DC does the same, bit a phone call to the DC tax authorities will get you a definite answer.

However, I suspect that MD taxes were withheld from your wages, unless you were very clear that you lived ONLY in NJ. If MD taxes were withheld, you need to file a MD tax return to claim a complete refund because you neitehr worked nor lived in MD, so they have NO LEGAL CLAIM to tax your DC salary
