My name is Mary and I just turned twenty. I started my period when I was fourteen and I was rather heavy with severe cramping (to the point where I needed prescribed medication). For as long as I can remember I've had irregular periods where they don't come on specific days and I can skip several months with out having a period. When I do have a period instead of bleeding bright red or anything I either have a brown discharge or a dark brown gooey/slimy discharge. I'm not sexually active (still a virgin) and I haven't seen a gynecologist in YEARS because of not having health insurance. I'm not sure if this is normal for periods or if it's something I should look into. It doesn't seem right for there to be no blood though when I'm on my period.

I would hope that your periods have regulated themselves by your age, but I wouldn't just jump to conclusion that something is wrong, some women just have abnormal periods. I would, however, look into a health clinic or something and get an exam and perhaps get on hormone therapy or maybe even just birth control, simply to regulate your cycles.
