Hi
I am J-1 visa holder from India n came to US in mid Nov,2007.
I am married & my parents n my wife is in India.
So how do I file taxes, Do I exempt from Social Security & Medicare Taxes?
Do I eligible to claim at least one dependent on me ?
How much I have pay on taxes if I earned only 3600 last year & my deductions were
About 400 some.
So do guide me for the same.
Thanks.

You may file Form 1040NR and claim your wife as a dependent.

You ARE exemption from Social Security and Medicare taxes for 2007 and 2008.

Even without claiming your wife, you probably will get all of your withheld taxes back, as your personal exemption ($3,400) almost completely offsets your 2007 U.S.-sourced income.
