Hi,

I was married in 2007 and my wife is still in India. I am planning on filing 2007 tax returns as 'married'. For US tax return, I have found out that I can file along with W-7 form for my wife (requesting ITIN).

I am not sure about Michigan (MI) state return. Can I file MI state return as married and leaving the SSN/ITIN field blank or simply stating 'Applied For' or shall I wait for US IRS to assign the ITIN prior to me applying for state return. In which case, I will probably need to get extension from the state.

Please advise.
Thank you!

I have an analogous situation with my wife: she is going to apply for her ITIN as well. I guess you should wait until your wife gets ITIN. Read instructions for Michigan tax carefully. If you are due a refund, you may file your return after April 15-th. If you must pay, apply for a time extension. See Instructions for MI1040 form more info.
