What makes you think an unlawful detainer is applicable here? Unfortunately when a house is foreclosed on, it voids any lease and the tenant has to vacate. An unlawful detainer is usually used in cases where back rent is owed or the tenant violates the lease.
He might find this site:
Unlawful Detainer (http://www.fresnosuperiorcourt.org/civil/unlawful_detainer.php)
Helpful though.

That's is what I thought but I was 100% sure ScottGem. He has to move. Can he sue his former landlord for rent and security deposit?

He can try, but if the house is in foreclosure hard to collect.
