Hi,

Tax year 2007.
I live in St Louis downtown area. My Project work location also downtown St Louis area. I'm a resident for the tax purposes for the whole of 2007. My employer is not located in St Louis and is HQ at California.

What I would like to know is if I'm liable for St Louis local (city) tax? In my W2 there is no entry towards local tax or any other, other than Federal and MO State.

Thanks in advance for clarification

Chandra

Residents of St. Louis have to pay an "earnings tax," and need to file a separate return just for the city - see below. Your employer should be withholding for St Louis from your pay check. However, it doesn't appear that you will face any penalty for underpayment if they don't withhold - as long as you can come up with the full payment by April 15.

Thanks for the clarification ebaines. Was surprised why my employer has not deducted!
And is this limited only to St Louis downtown city area or whole of st louis city and surrounding counties? Because I don't see any local tax recovery for many of my colleagues either. And is there any provision for online filing of st louis tax?

It apparently covers anyone living or working within city limits. You can learn more here:

Collector of Revenue (http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/collector/earningstax.html)

I don't see any reference to an on-line filing system.
