I worked for company back in 1998. I left the following year and soon after they went our of business. 5th 3rd Bank held the 401K's for that company. A few years back I called 5/3rd to transfer that money to a new 401K. They said they tried to find me and could not, which I find hard to believe. They said they gave the money to Government, I assume they were referring to the IRS. I have had no luck in locating this money. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Rich W

I think what they meant is that they transferred the account assets to the state - not the IRS. All states have programs that require financial institutions to turn over any unclaimed assets to them, and most (if not all) states have programs in place to allow the "lost" asset owners to find their missing assets. Try a Google search using your state and "unclaimed assets" - that should lead you to your state's web site. For example, here's the web site for Illinois:

Alexi Giannoulias - Illinois State Treasurer (http://www.treasurer.il.gov/programs/cash-dash/cash-dash.aspx)
