View Full Version : Unknown brand of fan light cover won't come off.

I bought a house with a nice ceiling fan but no visible brand name anywhere on this fan to identify it and no manual to be found. The bulb recently burned out and the bulb cover will not come off. It seems like it should twist off but even having a person holding and a person twisting... still no movement. Even my handyman can't figure this one out. Any ideas? It appeared to be a halogen bulb if that helps.

Any chance that you can post a picture?

Usually you apply pressure and rotate until the glass drops out.

Ceilingfan, Chapman got a picture for you, I knew you catch this later today. Chap just doesn't know how to attach the picture and I'm no help in that area. Can you help with the attachment? Thanks,
Bob

I don't know how to attach either, I usually host them elsewhere.

The picture she emailed is not of the actual fan, but of another fan. That's no help to me.

Here is how I post pictures. Download from camera to desktop. Convert to JPEG format. Click Go Advance, click Manage Attachments, click Browse, find pic then click open, click upload. Then click Submit Answer.
There is a size restriction. If pic won't upload go back and reduce size of pic

Did you try another pic. After you click upload watch to see if was successfully uploaded. The only reason I have seen for not being successful is size.

Chapman

Glad you can see the pics now. I wonder what brand it is and where it came from. I have had no luck finding it on line or in stores. Hopefully Ceilingfan will recognize it.

What country are you from?

Chapman

Uh oh... I am from the USA, but the previous home owner was Lebanese. You don't think...

Don't know, maybe he brought it with him. Ceilingfan will still be the better expert on this.

Has anyone seen this lighted fan? HELP!!

The glass either has to twist off, (maybe using the ring around the glass) or it may be on clips that pull straight down. Either way, the easiest way to get it off would be to put on a pair of rubber gloves for traction and twist. If there is a halogen bulb inside, it probably got quite hot and then its really tight to twist off.

Chapman
Mar 7, 2008, 12:24 PM
I have tried twisting the ring, the glass and the glass and ring with 2 people... one holding and one twisting. I can see that it definitely has a halogen bulb. The halogen bulb making it hot and hard to twist makes a lot of sense.
I will try pulling straight down. I haven't tried that yet. I should pull the outer edge of the metal ring? Never dreamed in a million years I'd be having to ask how to change a light bulb.

Yes, I guess I would try everything. Did your handyman or yourself ever loosen the scews that hold the canopy up to the ceiling? It should drop down and there may be a model number inside it. (or even a date it was manufactured would help)

Mar 7, 2008, 02:09 PM
I've seen that fan before, but I don't recall the manufacturer offhand. I can do some research if it becomes necessary.

Does the glass move at all when you attempt to either rotate it or push it up?

ballengerb1
Mar 7, 2008, 03:34 PM
The globe looks a bit like a Hampton Bay Carosel. Try pushing up with slight pressue on the gallss then give a 1/8 twist counterclockwise.

Chapman
Mar 7, 2008, 05:45 PM
I have just finished trying all of the above. Nothing...
The metal ring moved a few millimeters when I pushed up and turned counter clockwise but goes no farther. The fact that it moved a few millimeters might suggest that pushing up and turning counter clockwise might be the answer... or not... but now I need to get someone to hold the glass globe stationary and use more force. It is hard to do with 2 hands. I am ready to throw a rock at it... but then again, I would never be able to find a replacement part.
Never have loosened it from the ceiling. I hope I don't have to resort to that.

ceilingfanrepair
Mar 7, 2008, 06:41 PM
Loosening it from the ceiling won't help.

Either the glass globe itself unscrews, or the metal ring is holding it in place. Which one, I have no idea, you'll have to experiment with both. If it is the former, the glass might be stuck and some lubricant might help.

BTW, Ballenger, THIS is the Carosel:

Should I just throw a rock at it? Come on...

Will try again tomorrow with some help... hopefully.

Is it possible we can't find it because it's a "bad design" and it was recalled? Shouldn't this be easier?

Ceiling, interesting picture and I'm sure you got it right but the Caroel I saw yesterday at Home Depot has a round single globe like Chapman's. The must have made a model change but the funky colors are the same. Also similar to the Windward III Hampton Bay - Windward III Ceiling Fan in Brushed Steel - 55154 - Home Depot Canada (http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=942684&Ntt=942684&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&recN=0&N=0&Ntk=level1&eid=ShopToIt&utm_source=ShopToIt&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=942684)

Honestly, it's one of those things I can't give you a clear answer on unless it's right in front of me.

If anyone has any time, they can try to look online and find exactly what make and model fan it is. www.homedepot.com Lowe's Home Improvement: Buy Kitchen Cabinets, Paint, Appliances & Flooring (http://www.lowes.com) Menards.com - Home (http://www.menards.com) Ceiling fans & Lighting Accessories on Fanshack.com (http://www.fanshack.com) Ceiling Fans, Lighting, Fireplace Doors, Gas Logs, Fire Magic Barbecues and more! (http://www.hansenwholesale.com) and so on.

I've been meaning to but I haven't had time yet.

Okay... so after looking at another 2000 fans, this is the closest construction I could find. Maybe I should try their 800 # to see how it works?
Doe this pic spark any ideas?

ceilingfanrepair
Mar 9, 2008, 03:30 PM
That looks nothing like it, to me.

I've actually SEEN your fan before, I just can't place where. I see thousands of ceiling fans, as you might imagine.

ballengerb1
Mar 9, 2008, 07:54 PM
I agree, that fan isn't similar in design. Still looking for a picture of the Carosel with the large single globe, that one is very similar. I see it in the store but not on line. Chapman, did my last instruction not work for you? If not try 1/8 turn clockwise but the Carosel comes off with 1/8 counterclockwise.

Chapman
Mar 9, 2008, 08:05 PM
I tried... but I'm not sure it even budged that far. Either it is stuck (melted shut) or..? D

Do you know where I can find a big heavy brick?

ballengerb1
Mar 9, 2008, 08:09 PM
If you attach a hangmans noose to the fan blade you mat find a heavy enough object to pull it down. I'm sorry we are running out of ideas for you. Not knowing the brand is eventually going to shut us down. Does this unit have a remote, any brand name on the remote? Kids , do not try the noose experiment at home.

Chapman
Mar 10, 2008, 11:35 AM
No remote... at least there wasn't one when I bought the house. I have some help later tonight to help hold the globe while I try again.

If it ever does come off... and then I get the bulb out to see what kind of bulb I need to replace it... wouldn't it stink if it wasn't the bulb after all?

ballengerb1
Mar 10, 2008, 12:40 PM
Yep but think of all you are learning. It will eventually be the bulb. Most home center sell a special bulb for fans that's a little sturdier than a normal bulb.

Chapman
Mar 10, 2008, 12:48 PM
Thanks for the tip. Do they have special halogen bulbs for fans too?

ballengerb1
Mar 10, 2008, 12:51 PM
Some fans do take a halogen and there are several bases or pins so wait until you have your globe off and then you' will see what you have.

Mar 10, 2008, 04:35 PM
If it doesn't have a remote, how is it operated?

Chapman lives in the same city as me. I'm going to go look at it in person later this week.

Yep. With Favre retiring you don't have much to look forward to other than work. We folks in Chicago actually respected him too and could have liked him better if he didn't cream us so often. Tell us what you find. Bob

Wow, and I was just in Chicago last weekend. I'll be back this weekend coming up.

I'm sure Chapman has heard of Favre, and is in denial, as I am.

How about, I went over and looked at it, and was just as stumped as her. And no make/model on the fan whatsover.

Then, as I was demonstrating "this is how light glass is normally removed" it popped right out! Despite the fact that I'd already tried this technique several times before.

Chapman was very hospitable, and not only gave me compensation for my time/gas, but also fed me! So everyone involved is happy.

A trick I gave her I will share with others: when reinstalling stubborn glass, coat the contact points with vasoline so it doesn't get stuck again.

I have had similar troubles with bulbs lately and unscrewed several only to find out I had the glass only and the threads were still in the socket. I put a small smear of grease on the threads too.

How about... THANK-YOU CEILINGFANREPAIR!!
This awesome guy took time out of his day to make a house call and give it a go. I'm glad it gave him a hard time at 1st because I would have felt real stupid if it had surrendered peacefully. This very personable gentleman who has the skills to back up his confident advice should start his own ceiling fan house call service. Won't be needing the rock, brick or noose... he showed me how it works. It may not be rocket science, but this one had us all stumped. Thanks for going out on a limb... that's where the fruit is.

I used to do house calls and installations, but there's really not much of a market for it. I still get an occasional referral from local appliance repair shops, but I travel so much that it makes it sort of impractical on a regular basis.

Thank you, and you're welcome, Chapman for the above message.
