I don't get to drive this a lot, but when I do, I wish it wasn't such a pain in the neck to get started. Last week I replaced the battery, plugs and wires hoping it would remedy the problem but no luck. Now I think the timing is out, I had it timed professionally at a garage in 2006 but later I found out the mechanic got fired for taking oxycotin on the job so that is what makes me think the timing is still off.

When I try to start the engine it will just turn over repeatedly, after a while it might start or it might backfire. Once I get it started it hit or miss, mostly it will stall out and I have to try a couple more times to get it running. This thing used to start all the time before I had the timing fixed (replaced the camshaft). I've heard you adjust the timing by ear by rotating the distributor slightly while the engine is running, just so I can at least get it started and to another garage. Engine is a 258 i6 with a carter carb. Thanks

Most likely that is the problem just loosen the lock nut a at the base of the distrib and turn slitly either way till u get to start after star turn till it levels out put don't loosen the nut much just where u can berly turn it if u loosen it too much it will move when trying to start hope this helps
