Ok I just recently got a PApillon puppy, she is about 9 weeks old now, and has had her first series of shots etc... I need to take her this week to get her next set.

My question is lately her poop has had what looks like rice, for lack of a better word. Should I be worried? Is it worms or something serious?

Has she been dewormed yet? Has she thrown up white stuff that looks like linguini? (Yes, it sounds like she has worms.)

Sounds like tape worms. Speak to your vet. The vet can give you something to get rid of them.

From the shot records the breeder gave me, she was dewormed... and she hasn't thrown anything up. I just noticed the worms I guess this morning. And I had been keeping an eye out for that kind of stuff since I got her.

Well I guess I will be hitting the vet up Monday morning... or is it an emergency? Should I try and find a weekend vet?

My first puppy so I'm unsure lol

I think it is safe to wait until Monday.

Also what are you feeding? I really like Wellness Super Mix for puppies they have adult formulas too it may just be what your feeding at the age she is and she is fresh off milk. Wellness Puppy mix contains certain mother milk ingredients in it that should help your puppy.

I'm using pro plan puppy (the kind with like lamb and something else) It's what the breeder started using, so I didn't want to change it yet. Although I think it was a different flavored pro plan the breeder used (I couldn't find the same puppy flavor she used) so I got another (same brand) puppy mix, and did the whole mix old and new food just in case... like 75% old food, about 2 days ago.

It sounds like worms to me. At the rescue where I got my pup they dewormed every week - it is not a one shot deal. My pup got worms again a week after I got her. You should see the vet. They can give you a stronger dose to deworm if that is what they see fit.

k, Monday morning, I will go and take care of it... no wonder she was draggin her butt all over the carpet. (which is why I started paynig attention to the poop) *sigh* poor baby

Oh after which series of shots is it OK to take your dog out side and not worry, or introduce her to new dogs?

Talk to your vet, my vet said after the second parvo shot it would be safe to be around other dogs. We started visiting the dog park at 4 1/2 months. Vets vary in their opinions on this - talk to your vet. Until then make sure you stay away from unknown dogs and areas frequented by other dogs.

K thanks for the advice. My puppy has only been around my parents Golden Retriever (up to date shots) and just for a few seconds. And my ferret... which I don't think can transmit parvo.

It does sound like tapeworms. Most of the routine puppy dewormers don't contain anything effective for tapes. Tapeworms are not spread directly dog to dog, they must go through an "intermediate host". For animals that hunt, this can be raw meat, but most often they have swallowed an infected flea. When you take the puppy to the vet, take in a stool sample that contains the "rice" if you can, since they don't pass in every stool.

Thanks, I was going to say I haven't noticed them in every piece... So I will definitely do that, and show the vet... So is that pretty easy for the vet to take care of? Not life threatening even with treatment?

She had fleas for a few days when I had her at my PArents, so I would guess that's where its from. (as of now, no fleas)

If it is tapeworms, you will probably have to give a couple of treatments, and of course, she could pick them back up at any time. They usually don't cause major problemst. If they have been in the dog's system a long time, they can cause weight loss, dull haircoat and a general unthrifty appearance.

She is only 9 weeks Tuesday, so I don't think she would have had them very long. She had been dewormed with her first series of puppy shots so hopefully its all good. In the morning I will be taking her to the vet. :) thanks
