My husband is in horrible pain. We have a dentist appointment set for Tuesday (4 days away), but the pain meds he's taking aren't really helping. Does anyone have a suggestion to help with the pain? He can't eat and can barely sleep. I hate seeing him hurting like this. Thank you in advance! I really appreciate your help!

Druggist can recommend a topical application for the tooth pain, to get him through till his appointment. But it doesn't sound good and could be impacted tooth which means infection is building up underneath or thereabouts with no where to go. Can he go to an emerg in the meantime?

The best topical pain reliever I know is called Clove Oil. In most places it is not over the counter, but does not need a prescription. Just go to the druggist and ask for it. They have it behind the counter.

Actually, we just got the clove oil today at GNC. OTC, and the last bottle they had. I'm using grapeseed oil as a carrier oil. He's using anbesol, and already went to his doctor. I'm thinking maybe a tea bag or garlic? I know garlic has healing properties. Warm salt water? When my wisdom teeth were impacted, I could taste the infection, but he said he doesn't have that infection taste. His face isn't hot, and it only got really bad today after he brushed his teeth. I think he aggravated the exposed nerve endings. I just feel really bad because I can't do anything for him.

Warm salt water rinses should sooth the tissues. Try alternating Tylenol and Advil every 2 hours until the pain subsides. If there is an infection he will need an antibiotic. Does he have a gum boil? If he does it means there is an abscess and it's not draining which is building up pressure in the tooth. You can try to drain the abscess by breaking it and follow by using the warm salt water to rinse.

No, there isn't a boil. I'm just wondering if brushing his teeth aggravated it. I finally got him to eat some soup, and gave him an ice pack for his face which helped him go to sleep.

If he's an aggressive brusher perhaps he has abraded the enamel. Have him brush with Sensodyne (buy the original not the Sensodyne-F). It may take a few days before he feels any relief though. An ultra soft toothbrush (again Sensodyne makes a wonderful ultra soft brush) and NO scrubbing action might help too.
If he can feel a notch at the gumline with his fingernail he's either got abrasion or an abfraction (caused by clenching and grinding).

Luckily we found a dentist that was open today. We're sitting in the waiting room right now, and we've been here for about 2 hours. Had to drive an hour and a half to get here.

Well, good luck, hopefully it will all be over soon and not cost too much. Hope you have a dental plan.

No, our insurance doesn't cover dental, but they'll put us on a payment plan. Was only 79.00 today.

I have a suggestion I called GREEN TEA BAGS -- I put a cup of water in the Microwave

For 1 1/2 and remove it when HOT ( I prefer not to have a string attached to it -- so

I pull the string out of the bag and discard ) Place tea bag in cup and use spoon to stir,

Remove tea bag, and squeeze most of the water out of it... I make a mound of tea on

One side and fold the flap over -- looks like chewing tobacco chunk -- place it where teeth

Are hurting and bite down lightly -- don't want to puncture the bag... Sip the tea which is

Supposed to be healthy for you -- I usually leave it on one side for 15 minutes & then switch

I have many bad teeth -- this has really saved the day -- usually do it before bedtime

Teeth don't bother sleep during the night...

Remedies for tooth aches are great if only used until you can get professional help. Just to lull the pain and forget about it is not good because much can be going on behind the scenes so to speak.

Bad oral hygiene is the major cause of tooth decay, gingivitis, causing rotting teeth and gums. If impacted teeth are left untreated much can happen in the way of the poison reaching vital organs and at the very most causing heart attacks, or more or less heart disease.

Scary, isn't it. So, if you have a toothache have it treated immediately by your dentist, or have your teeth checked every six months. Its called preventative and it really does work to resolve problems later on in life.

There is nothing like having your own teeth for the rest of your life.

Thank you all for your answers! We're finally home. Turned out that his wisdom teeth were the problem, so they removed 3 wisdom teeth and one molar and he is SOOO much better! Luckily they had payment plans and after my insurance went through, our bill was only $486. About 1/2 of the original bill. I'm doin' a happy dance!
