When I turn my HP DV1170 it will quickly blink and go back off. I have tried everything. A friend said the power source on the motherboard probably went out and I would need to replace it.

It is worth my time and money trying to get another one and should I even try to install it?

Thanks

Good question. There may be other problems as well; bad battery, bad power cord/outlet, bad compnent. You might also want to consider repair costs compared to getting a new one. Is it worth losing the data on the old one? If I were in a situation like this, I would just get a new one. Usually a faulty laptop could mean other things inside of it will start failing. By the way, how old is your laptop?

I guess the laptop is 2 or 3 years old. I already bought a new laptop. I removed the HD from the broken one and using that for an external drive. I was just thinking of trying to get the old laptop up and running for my wife.

I tried different batteries etc. with no luck.
I also checked out a site, Step By Step Instructions On How To Take Your Laptop Apart (http://www.laptop-repair.info/take_laptop_apart.html).
Which explains what is involved breaking down a laptop but I guess it depends on the cost of another motherboard.

Ya, I'd have to say that the motherboard makes up maybe 40% of the cost of the laptop. Check the repair costs, and if they seem a little steep, get a new laptop.
