Has anyone ever had experience where a mechanical water meter is defective and shows water usage when in fact no water is passing through the meter?

There are two things that might be of interest:

1. Air will be counted as water
2. Underground pipes within the house can spring leaks.

What kind of leak rate are you getting?

If you shut your main does the needle still spin?

Outstanding answers! I had the same problem. One month my water bill shot sky high. I checked and nothing was leaking on my end so I requested that they change out the water meter. That solved my problem. Faulty water meter. Good luck, Tom

QUOTE] I keep the ball valve in the house closed so if there is in fact a leak it would be between the meter and the house. The meter doesn't spin when the main is closed, only when open[/QUOTE] "When the main is closed". Does that mean the house shut off or the meter shutoff? Back to you. Tom
