how do I make 'a' the subject of this equation?

By isolating it and moving the 2 and the (v - u) to the other side. Since it's in parentheses, treat the (v - u) as a single unit. It's multiplied originally so that cues you as to what to do with it. The 2 is divided originally so that likewise cues you what to do with that.
