Gender's got nothing to do with it. If you think you can then try.
Is this heat only, or heat and A/C?
If it is heat only then it is easy. You will have a red and white wires coming in and they go to the "R" and "W" terminals respectively. Sometimes the "R" terminal is marked "RH". Don't worry about any jumpers that may come with it.
If it is A/C or heat and A/C then this may get confusing.

If you attempt, and feel comfortable, then turn off breaker to Air Handler, Look at old thermostat wiring, draw a picture of the wire colors and the terminal they connect to.
Then connect to same terminals:R,G,W,etc.
Red is usually 24 Volts from transformer and goes to (R), White(W)is usually Heat, Green(G)is usually Blower, Blue or yellow usually is for cooling and goes to outside Compressor contactor. Turn back on and test.
