Hello,
I sent out most of my 1099 already but I have one vendor who doesn't want to give me his SSN#. He received commission from my company in 2007 that was over $600. I sent him numerous e-mails and an official W9 but still haven't gotten his SSN#. He faild to give me his contact phone number also.
He works for a corporation but his commission check was issued to his name. What do I do?
Any help would be appreciated.

Send the 1099 out without the ss# on it. Put a note in the SS box that says SS# refused.

Thank you, Wildsporty. Do you know if there would be a penalty if I did that?

Keep at copy of the letter to the person earning the amount and the W-9 sent or at least document when it was sent. If you do not wish to write on the 1099 you could send a separate letter with the 1099 explaining that you tried numerous times to get the ss# and the person refused to give it to you.

If you get a letter from the government saying that you have missing SS#'s , send the information to them that you tried to obtain the number and was unable to do so. They will waive the 50.00 penalty.

We have more than a few of these and we very seldom pay penalties. As long as you make a reasonable effort to obtain the number they will waive the penalty.
