Hi,

I had the maintenance man come today to service my heating/AC unit. It's a Lennox 2 ton gas package unit. I'm bummed because he turned off my heat saying legally he had to. I had cracks in my heat exchanger. He said they can't get a new heat exchanger so I will need a new unit.

Of course I just 2 months ago let my America Home Shield lapse so I will be paying for it on my own. Errrr I've kicked myself all day.

I've been in the house 2 years and the unit was installed in 1993. There wouldn't be a warranty on it would there? The previous owners didn't mention so I have no clue.

The company that did the maintenance gave me a quote on a Payne PY3P024060. Is that a good brand? I have no clue.

I don't know who to contact or what to look for or what to ask. All I know is that I want many quotes before I decide. What do I look for in a new unit. How will I know I'm not getting screwed.

I was laid off last year so I'm using my emergency fund for this so I don't want to go overly expensive, but I don't want cheap either.

Help!!

Thanks!

How much was the quote? Payne is actually a builders version of Bryant.

You should call Lennox with your Model and Serial number to check on the warranty. It could have been a 20-25 year one. Post model and serial here for the old unit. Be accurate with the letters and numbers.

I am all for the danagers of cracked heat exchangers. They are very dangerous..
On that note what test did the contractor do to determine the exchangers where cracked?

Thanks guys!

I have a Lennox Gas Package Unit MODEL: GCS20H-261-50-2P SERIAL#: 5693A03376

I went online and checked on the property tax search of my home and it was first lived in in June 8th, 1993. Is that when any warranty begins?

That would be great if it had a warranty and I would be one happy person, but I'm sure not getting my hopes up.

pelle, I'm not sure what test he performed. He just got me to go with him so he could show me on the xchanger. He had circled several places with a Sharpie so I could see. He said it was a matter of time if using the heat that they could split and he couldn't legally leave like that and I had to sign a waiver.

I'm new at all this so I hadn't a clue at what I should have asked or looked for.

Thanks again!

Oh my gosh. I'm one happy person right now. Thanks so much you guys!!

I called Lennox and they informed me that my heat exchanger is still under warranty until July of this year. For some reason they add 6 months to the warranty's manufactured date. Don't ask me. They went by the model # and serial # to tell what date to add the 6 months to.

Anyway I told Lennox that the technician told me they had called to ask about the part to replace the heat exchanger and they no longer have that part. She told me they do and then proceeded to give me reputable Lennox dealers' phone numbers in my area so I could call. She said perhaps since they aren't a Lennox dealer that they don't want to bother with getting the part.

I called the first number she gave me and they are again checking on the warranty and will call me back and could be out as early as today.

I'm too excited. This would keep me going for hopefully at least another year and I won't have to buy a brand new unit right now.

When I called the place that is checking for me right now, they had never heard of someone turning the heater off completely. They said they will leave on even if cracks but that they would telll the people not to use it.

Wow, thanks so so much for all your input. This is all very interesting and I feel like I've learned a lot.

Well now I'm back to square one. The first quote I got for labor was $1,150. Wow!! I had no idea.

The labor rate is WAY TO HIGH. Since you know you can get the heatX call around for a better price. OR do it yourself.

Lennox will not warranty it if you do it yourself. It is a high estimate on the labor. The GCS20 is easer than the GCS10 so it could be worse.
