My husbands 2001 chevy s10 4cylinder broke down. It turn over but will not fire up. What could be the problem. And how hard is it to fix? And how affordable.

It could possibly be the starter, or the alternator. You can call an auto parts store, and get a price on a part, and then call an automobile repair shop and see how much it would cost to get it fixed. First ask about if they provide the part, then ask how much if you provide the part. They aren't that difficult to repair though, especially on a little S10.

No and no. Tab said the truck turns over but won't start; that means the starter is engaging but the motor is not firing up. And the alternator has nothing to do with starting; it has to do with the charging system.
A typical problem in GM vehicles is the fuel pump going out without warning. Check for fuel pressure.

Could be a fuel concern but it could be a faulty ignition module or coil.
If you can hear the fuel pump prime when the key is turned to the run position, check for spark while cranking. Let us know.

This is a terrible response! You don't understand cars or mechanics.
The shop doing the repair isn't going to like you bringing a part and asking them to put it on. If they do agree to install the part you provide, you will likely pay more for labor to offset the lost profit they would have gotten by selling you the part. And you will get no warranty.
You don't take a steak into the restaurant and ask them to cook it.

The first thing that came to my mind was a sticking starter drive. You know tap, tap on the starter when someone is on the key.
Does it turn over? Fuel pressure?? spark?

*ROFL* Omg, I love you :D
People don't understand this concept... the same way they think there's nothing wrong with calling me up and asking me how they can fix their car themselves. Would you ever in your life dream of calling McDonald's and saying, "Can you tell me how to make your Quarter Pounder? I just don't feel like paying you for it"? NO, you wouldn't!

Wow thanks for all the replys we are having it checked think it is the fuel filter or pump. We will find out this weekend thanks for all the help. But it is not the starter or the alternator. I knew it wasn't that cause I have had that go wrong on my other car so I knew that. But it has something to do with the fuel

Also. During the night or darkness. Check for a cracked coil. These love to spark down the side of them. Just crank it and have some look where the coil is at.
Let us know what you find.

I'm having the same problem in my 2002 F-150, except I also have a leak some where causing my dashlights to stay on when my key isn't even in the hole. This only happens when it rains. But now I have a new problem and it is the same one you are having, I would like some help too. Anyone please!

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.9 motor. I had just replaced the spark plugs because it was starting but not turning over or firing up. After I changed them it started just fine for about two days but then it started doing the same thing as before by not firing up. Can someone please help me by telling me what could possibly be the problem. Thanks in advance. (Don't know if this would help but I did put some sea foam in it because it had sat up for about three months and started it and let it run for about 15 minutes before all of this happened.)

Only install Champion spark plugs in Dodge trucks--use the exact part no. that originally came in the vehicle. My experience has been that other plugs break down very fast in Dodge trucks, leading to crank but won't start situations.
