I lived in NC for 8 months and owe taxes for retirement income. I moved to TN for the remaining 4 months of 2007 and only then began receiving Social Security. TN doesn't require paying state taxes. On state tax forms (for NC) I'm supposed to take my full taxable income number from the Federal form and plug it into the state form. But I shouldn't own taxes on either social security or retirement income for the 4 months I've had my residency in TN. Help, Please! How do I figure this?

You pay income tax in NC only on the income you received from Jan until the date you moved out of state. You will need to complete the worksheet on page 12 of D-401 to determine how much of your total income is subject to NC tax, and then transfer that calculation to D-400 lines 49-51.
