A couple years ago I had a checking account that I had bounced a check in and it just spiraled down from there! National city Bank kept sending the same checks through my account adding more bouncing fees to my negative balance. They did not pay any of these checks! I had contacted the bank about the reducing the charges since nothing was paid by them and they wouldn't work with me at all so I closed out the account. I have been receiviing letters from a collection agency for the balance of $469! Do I have to pay this total amount since none of the checks were covered? Is there any way around it since they are just bank charges for the checks going through my account?

Hello mray1
It is your responsibility to make sure that funds are there to cover a check once it is written
With that being said we all make mistakes but why didn't you put money in to cover the check and fees etc. A couple of years is a long time to not take care of a bounced check. Not having overdraft protection is why your bank would not cover it. In some states it is criminal offense to not take care of a bounced check.

Yes you have to pay, and/or make some arrangements with the collection agency. If it is 2 years old, and with a collection company now most likely they may be willing to settle for less at this point, have you offered 1/2 to settle?

I paid all of the checks that occurred from this. My question is about the account itself! I called my bank when I first found out it was in the negative to see if anything else was going to go through the account before I made the deposit the next morning and they told me no! The next day when I went into the bank~ they had resent the checks through the account doubling the alredy negative balance! The money that is owed on the account is the overdraft charges~ no checks! I know a couple people who have had the same thing happen with this bank and they live in a different state so it isn't just the branch that I used. As I said above~ before closing the account I called to see if they would work with me at all since the fees were just from the bank also since I had spoken with someone re: the account before it ended up the way it did!
