Bah, this sounds like a stupid concern, but I don't know, it bugs the hell out of me. My girlfriend is (most likely) about to go on birth control, which means she's going to be having her first pelvic exam. And from what little I know of it, it's a... stretch... in most cases, so I guess my worry is that I'll become sexually useless to her after the exam... or I won't have the same effect at the very least.

EDIT: also, my girlfriend is fairly small/short, as am I, so that makes me feel even worse, cause the examiner's fingers don't shrink to fit the patient

If I were you I'd stop finding things to worry about and just be there for you g/f until you get the facts from your doctor,and I must say I admire your concern for you lady friend,but the rest of that stuff is in your head,so relax and see what happens,trust me she'll still love you!Maybe more!:cool:

Literally millions of women have pelvic examinations several times during their lives. It is a way of checking for problems in the vaginal and reproduction areas.

When the examination takes place a speculum is used in order to to hold the walls of the vagina apart to facilitate an internal examination and take a pap smear. You can find a picture of a speculum at:

There is absolutely no reason for your you or your girlfriend to be concerned. Although the exam may feel a little uncomfortable, there should be no pain. If pain is experienced your girlfriend should tell the examiner. There are no side effects to having a pelvic exam and after the examination is completed the vaginal wall will return to normal. Your girlfriend may be a little sore after having the smear taken but this is normal and will soon disappear.

There is no reason why a pelvic examination should affect your or your girlfriend's sexual performance, even though your girlfriend and you are fairly small.

If your girlfriend is concerned or embarrassed, she can request the examination be done by a female. It is important that she relax during the process because that will allow the examination to be done easier and more quick. If she feels tense taking deep breaths and trying to think pleasant thoughts rather than what is happening could help. The exam should last approximately 10 minutes.

Please don't worry about this. A pelvic exam won't cause any problems with sexual intercourse. The only thing is that maybe the day of or the day after her exam she could be a little sore inside, esecially if this is her first one, and in turn may make her a little uncomfortable with penetration. But the discomfort should go away in a day or so.

The speculum, the device that opens the vaginal wall, so that the doctor can better get a view of the cervix, can cause some soreness. Esecially if this is her very first exam.

Don't let this bother you so much, there is really nothing to be worried about. Every woman has an exam and I haven't ever heard it complicating their sex life. By your post it sounds like your worried that the exam is going to "stretch" her out? Am I right? If that is what your worried about, then your worring needlessly. The vaginal walls are made up of muscle and they contract and stretch to allow birth to happen. But they go back to a normal shape after birth, to a degree, most doctors will tell new mothers to do Kegal excersises, which they voluntarily contract thir vaginal muscles and strenghtn them in order to get them tight again. Believe me a Speculum is nothing compared to a baby or even a tampon. Will it stretch a little when put in, yes? But not to the degree a baby would stretch it.

Bizygurl is right. During a pelvic exam, the doctor will use a speculum shaped sort of like a duck's bill. The second part of the pelvic exam the doctor will insert 2 gloved fingers inside the vagina and checks the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries for normal development. The doctor might also do a pap smear exam, it's not the same thing as a pelvic exam. It is a gentle scraping of the loose cells at the opening of the cervix. The cells are then placed on a glass slide and sent to a lab for examination. The pap smear test is important as well, it can find the earliest signs diseases and infections. She will experience some soreness afterward, but it's normal.
