The most likely cause for shifting problems is located at your transmission. First off, is it a manual or an automatic transmission. Have you been maintaining your transmission fluid, making sure that the correct fluid is being applied, and the correct amount of transmission fluid is also a crucial matter. Too little of fluid will cause the transmission to wear out, and cause shifting problems, and too much fluid will also cause a malfunction. You said that your vehicle is also a 1992, your transmission could just be getting wore out, expessially if there is a lot of miles on the vehicle. Don't forget, in order to check your transmission fluid properly, the vehicle needs to be at a normal operating temperature, and idleing, it is then that you can check the fluid level.
