I had an existing fan that ran to a switch. It has two turning knobs; one for dimming the light and the other for the fan to turn on and off, and adjusting the speeds. I had to replace the fan and cannot figure where the "red" wire goes now. So as it stands the fan and light have power and work on the pull chains, but the switch no longer works. And as the fan is together and working, and it's been some time since I put it together I cannot recall if I left any other wires disconnected or not. Or if this may classify somehow as a 3 way switch and maybe there's a white wire connected somewhere that should not be and can cause a hazard. Any help is appreciated.

I would expose wires at ceiling/ remove if needed and match Fan and light wires at switch,
The color of wires at both ends are what you're looking for.

White and green is neutral and ground, then black is the fan, blue is the light.
You should have 2 wires othe than ground and neutral.
Remove switch, what colors do you have? At ceiling?

The switch has black, blue, and red coming out of it. The black is connected to 3 white wires. The blue wire is connected to the red wire that goes up to the ceiling fan box. The red wire is clamped to the ground wire. And in the switch box is two black wires that are nutted together not in connection with the switch.

Ok, some of that doesn't sound right.
To clarify my question: what wires do you have in the ceiling box, that connected to the old fan?

Well there was a black, a red, a white, a ground, and a white with black electrical tape wrapped around it. I don't believe that this was ran and done up professionally. As the previous homeowner of some 20 years(since the house was built) was a bigtime DIYer.

Try: black-black, blue-red, white-white. That would be normal. However the black tape on the white MAY mean this doesn't apply.
