Saturday night it got -21 here in MN and I was having a party here and slightly opened a few windows and had the wood burning stove going and the central air came on. Not sure how long it was running. By the way it has a cover on it.
Why would it of come on?
And is it damaged?

((Why would it of come on))
Because the thermostat told it to turn on.
((And is it damaged?))
Hopefully not but when the weather warms turn it on and see what happens.
Covers are a good idea for winter. That way all the moisture under the cover gets to rust out or corrode the unit (not good). Never recommend a cover always just cover the top only to keep out the leaves and debris.
