Worst Food - Spam
What do you think is a waste of space in the supermarket? :D

Ooooooooooooooooooh, I love fried spam sandwiches! (probably heart attack central, but oh well... )
Worst food - ham salad sold in the deli section. I once heard what is in it and how it is made, so I make my own now.

If you wouldn't be too scared, ask at the deli next time you go grocery shopping. First, kind of make friends with one of the clerks and order some other stuff like sliced meat or cheese, and then whisper over to her, "Will you tell me what goes into the ham salad that makes it so pink?"

LOL! Never tried Spam or Fancy Feast... actually, wondering a little about that one... :)
I lived in China for two years and let me tell you, wow...
Fried Scorpions and Starfish were absolutely, positively disgusting... but... I'm going to have to go with Silk Worm as the worst possible food ever!

HC I have to add to your China experience. I was in Hong Kong a few years ago and was taken out to a restaurant where I was given what is described as a delicacy and was very expensive , it was an Egg which was basically buried and allowed to ROT over a certain amount of years , on the plate it was basically BLACK , I got to tell you I didn't want to be rude so had to eat it , took about half an hour :-) YUCK!!

Hubby and I stopped at a grocery store late one night (I think we wanted ice cream or something) and every BUT us was buying buckets of pickled pig's feet. Yuck!
So my vote goes to pickled pigs feet. Or tripe. Or ostrich.
There are other foods that are horribly disgusting and just shouldn't exist, but they aren't in my local grocery store. Watch Bizzare Foods with Andrew Zimmern for prime examples.

I have been lied to my whole life. :(. Mom tried to pawn this... this... this... ugh whatever it is as food. Lima something or other... oh just horrible... I dropped it on the floor for the dog... and he threw it back... don't blame him. Horrible and very tramatizing. Mom was the type, you could not leave the table to your plate was clean, yeah uh huh.
I really think she was getting me back for being 10' 1 at birth and all the hours of labor.
Horrid creatures these lima things.

Lentils are terrible, the smell alone makes me want to blow chunks.
Escargo is on the top of my list too, I tried them once, it took half an hour to get one of those slimy buggers down my throat. Never again.
My parents used to eat Pork Hocks. Did they have any idea were those things could have been?
Well, I guess I'll pass on dinner tonight, for some reason I've lost my appetite.

Now, the sprouts, I'll pass on. And, I am not so sure about the brains, ugh... maybe if I didn't know what they are, I would eat them. Same goes for the ants, heehee.

A few food items that are hated on this thread but loved by me: cottage cheese w/seasoning salt (I could eat it everyday... I love it!), sardines on crackers & mustard, lima beans (w/lots of butter!), asparagus (favorite veggie), mashed potatoes & bean sprouts.
A few nasty food items I can't deal with: brussel sprouts (YUCK), pea & lentil soup (makes me gag), corned beef & cabbage (hate cooked cabbage alone but will eat it raw) and prunes & prune juice (sadly my mother made me drink it).
Has anyone ever tried scrapple before? TASTY STUFF!!

There are some foods my wife dislikes only for texture, not taste.
For ex, she doesn't like raw tomatoes, but is fine with a tomato soup or pasta red sauce (shes italian after all)... same with cottage cheese... it isn't the taste, it's the texture that icks her out. She's not a fan of naked yogurt, but if I make a bunch of berries mixed with a little yogurt (needs to be yoplait custard style) its fine.

I cannot stand supermarkets I do my level best to nip in and out as soon as poss'
The floor stacks are not necessary nor are the secondary promotion bins as the item is already on display on the appropriate shelf and then of course there's all those promotion signs telling you about the stack you've just triped over whilst your reaching for the same item on the shelf.
The staff who quite obviously have lost their voice accept for the occasional grunt now and again when spoken to look at you like you just been beamed down from some long lost planet by captain Scott from the enterprize and to think they are actually paid real money for this, they could definitely go

I thought I was the only one with that problem. I remember in the 70's you could make small talk with the sales clerks and cashiers. In the 90's I did nothing but run into the 'grunt is too much more than you deserve idiot' look.

Wow. You guys need to shop in my grocery store. Or better yet, my mom's. If I happen to go in with her, someone recognizes her, then freaks out because they recognize me and they remember when I was this big! I've gone in without her before and the cashier said, "Doesn't your mom shop here?". I've even run into one of the cashiers from my store in public and exchanged a smile and wave.
Guess the staff in my area are the exception!
Well... there is one lady I don't like, I call her "perma-frown-angry-lady". But most everyone else smiles, says hello and is very friendly. The ones who aren't don't last long. Except for perma-frown-angry-lady, that is. :)

I vote for pickled pigs feet. I've tasted it and I really don't like it. Caviar is my second vote, too salty. When it comes to pigs, it seems the only thing that they don't sell is the squeel.
I was at a restaurant that had pickled pigs ear on the menu. That's probably might be a third vote.
I was going to try octopus at a restaurant, but I didn't quite know what or how to eat it. Anybody have any ideas?

I was watching "How it's Made" on the Discovery channel last night, and they showed a fish farmer squeezing the eggs out of a fish. He was using them to fertilize, but it made me wonder if the same (or a similar) process is used for caviar. It was really creepy - the guy just squeezed the hell out of this fish and eggs literally SHOT out! Anyone remember the cartoon "Ren and Stimpy"? There was a episode where they squeezed caviar out of a fish - eerily similar...
I've never had caviar, but after seeing that, I don't want any!

Dried oranges. Eeew.
Squeeze cheese stuff is pretty gross too.
Fr_chuck, what are chittlings? I've never eard of them before.
I work in a grocery store. I used to try and make conversation with customers but after having the majority either completely ignore my attempts or give me dirty looks and reply in pissed off tones I gave up. I figure if customers want me to say more than "hi, how are you? did you find everything ok?" they'll say something themselves. I'm always happy to carry on a conversation. But I have noticed that sometimes when I shop in other stores and try to strike up a conversation I don't get much more than a grunt either. Ha

Do you mean how to eat what they have already made?
If they are well cooked, they go well with most rice dishes or maybe with a salad.
If not well cooked they can be a bit rubbery.
If you are planning to make an octopus dish at home I have a simple recipe:)

I have never eaten octopus cooked with skin or eaten it live.
I always remove the skin, and the stomach and the hard part of the head.
Cut into pieces, the tentacles and the fleshy head part too and eat them cooked.
