Hello,

I was an international student from August 2003 - May 2007 and I got one year extension to do my OPT. My wife has F2 visa.
I start working in June 2007 in California and now I am working on my taxes.
Since my wife doesn't have a social security number I want to apply for an ITIN for her.
I have a few of questions:

1. Is she entitled for an ITIN? I am not sure because someone told me that F2 visa holders are not entitled for one.
2. If she is entitled, what do I need to send for the IRS except for the notarized copy of her passport and visa? Should I also send a copy of her I20?
3. In the W7 form, what should I feed in the reason for submitting the W7? The options are as following:

a. Nonresident alien required to obtain ITIN to claim tax treaty benefit
b. Nonresident alien filing a U.S. tax return
c. U.S. resident alien (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return
d. Dependent of U.S. citizen/resident alien
e. Spouse of U.S. citizen/resident alien
f. Nonresident alien student, professor,
g. Dependent/spouse of a nonresident alien holding a U.S. visa

Thank you very much

1) It depends on which country you are from. If you are from india, you can claim her as a dependent and she WILL get the ITIN.

2) That's it. The notarized photocopy of the passport.

3) Choose E.
