About a week ago, I was doing laundry and I heard the downstairs toilet gurgling, when I went into investigate, it started overflowing, the washer was on the rinse cycle at the time. I went in and turned off the washer and the overflow stopped. My husband came in about that time and opened the drain value in the back of the townhouse and the toilet drained out. I turned on the washer to finish and it also drain out.

We called City water and sewage and they can out and checked the lines to front of the house. Said we had some roots, so my husband went and rented a machine with a snake and auger to clean out the line from the street to the front of the house.

Everything was fine until today. I started a load of clothes and again when it went to rinse, it started gurgling and backing up.

What else can I do before calling a plumber.
HELP!

Unless you husband got a big snake with about a 3" cutting head, he only made a small hole in the roots. Now the roots have caught tissue and other things and blocked the pipe again. Probably should call the professional. You can get those snakes caught in the sewer and then you have to dig it up.
