Cast iron can cost between $450 and $1200, steel is cheaper and then acrylic even cheaper. Its up to your pocket book. Cast is quieter but a real bear to install due to the weight. What is your price ranch?

Hey B1, found this after typying you reply to earlier reply, I want a solid tub that is least resistant to scratching , chipping and easiest to keep clean. I think after putting the sledge to the old blue iron tub for removal, I can easily see why it lasted over 35 years. I highly recommend cast iron tub for longest life especially if say for big brady bunch family. Steel is second best lighter but less resilent to chipping than the iron tub, noisy too, next I'd go with as you mentioned , the best quality performance fiberglass brands. American stardard run about 426.00 at Lowe's or HD.. personally, I rather be safe and spend the extra 2-300 dollars for a cast or steel virsus acrylic glass tub.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of steel bathtubs (http://inbathroom.com/store/suites/baths/steel-baths.html) and cast iron bathtubs:
Steel bathtub:
+Durable
+Do not allow a quick loss of warmth
+economical
+Retain colour well
+Resistant to damage
+Remains hygienic at all times
+Made of an easy-to-clean material

-Not available in all bath types
-Initially colder to get into

Cast iron bathtub:
+Cast iron tubs are designed to last fifty years or more
+Keeps water warmer for longer periods
+Heavy construction helps muffle noise and vibrations
+Cast iron can be repaired and renewed
+Cast iron baths lean more towards the traditional style

-Heavy and require a sturdy base on which to rest
-Expensive
-Initially colder to get into
