Hello All ,

I am currently pursuing my MS , I am also workign as a Graduate Research Assistant at the same place. My university has given me W2 form that has Federal and State Taxes withheld. I am an Indian.
I have filled in Form 1040A to claim State Tax refund for Ames. ( nt submitted thg )
Which other forms do I have to fill to file my taxes and claim refund for Federal Taxes ?

Utkarsh

On F1 visa you are nonresident for 5 years. You will file form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.
You are exempt from FICA taxes but you will pay income taxes. You will also file form 8843.

Since you are from India you will get standard deduction of $5,350 and exemption of $3,400 for the year 2007.

Thnks Mukta for the help.
8843 is for athletes and medical conditions ? Is it needed to be filled ?
Also 1040A is for State Taxes right ? My university gave the steps to fill this form.
Is there online help available to fill form 1040 ?

Utkarsh

Yes you will file 8843. You won't file 1040 (resident return). Non resident return can't be filed online.
For State income tax form, check at your State web site. Or which state?

Utkarsh:

We can help you at the link below my name. Also, Form 8843 is for ANYONE who is in this country under a F/J/M/Q visa, NOT just for atheletes and those with medical conditions.

If you want to try completing Form 1040NR-EZ by yourself (not recommended), you can get the form at Internal Revenue Service (http://www.irs.gov).

I was trying my hand filling 1040NREZ. (though I amd thinking to ask for professional help :D) my qs :
I'm from India... $5000 under TAX treaty should be filled against Line 11 or Line 6.
I don't wish for itemized deductions.
My income was 11052 (under wages as a RA ) and 2429 as scholarships. (This will be exempt under Line 8 right ? )
Help me :)

Actually, you can claim the $5,350 standard deduction.

You do NOT need to report the scholarship income at all.
