I have set up a desktop with Win xp and am trying to connect to my wireless
Cable modem/router with an adaptor. I can't connect as the message keeps appearing
Re can't find IP address?
My laptop works fine with the same setup. Can I assign the same ip address on the
Laptop to the desktop?:confused:

Nope.
The router shuld be set up to use DHCP and NAT. PPPOE should be set up in the router.
He easiet way then is to set the desktop and laptop to use DHCP. Iconfig /all from the command prompt will tell you what is going on. You may have to do an ipconfig /renew after making changes for the new changes to take effect.
Later you can set up a fixed range of IP addresses and set your desktop and any network printers to use a fixed IP address. The IP addresses will likely start with 192.168 or 10. These are private IP addresses which everybody has. It's not the public IP address temporarily given to by your ISP. That you can find by going to whatismyip.com
Your router configuration determines the range of fixed and DHCP assigned IP addresses.

Each computer has a different IP Address first is XXX.XXX.XX.100 next computer is
XXX.XXX.XX.101... two computers can not have the same IP Address

What Is the Exact error Message Getting While Typing IPCONFIG in the Dos Prompt..?
Start.> RUN > CMD > IPCONFIG...
