View Full Version : Shingles at ridge line on new roof are very bizarre

I am by no means experienced at evaluating roofs, but we recently had a pump house constructed and the shingles at the ridge line are very odd looking to me. They don't look like the shingles on the house, or anybody else's pump house that I can tell. It's cold here now, so if the shingles will all lay flat in spring/summer, I can live with it until then. However, if the installation was improper I'd like to know that ASAP so I can bring it to their attention.

There is nothing wrong with it at all. Don't worry. When you cap a ridge you can either by ridge caps or you can make them with left over shingles, and that's what they did, nothing wrong with that at all, in fact most would probably do it that way. As far as them lasting just as long... they will.
As far as the workmanship, I see nothing from the photos that look bad

Yes, looks like the way I see most done.

Thanks for the speedy answers. The handyman who built it said he DID buy the special caps! I saw one of them and they are definitely different than the other shingles were... oh well.
Anyway, will it flatten out in summer? That's my main concern. :)

Not sure exactly what you all flatten, but there will always be that wave look since one is placed on top of the other going down the ridge cap.
It does not loook like any special ridge cap, but looks like merely they used shingles to cap it.

Your roofer had to use other shingle different from the ones used on your roof to cap your pump house because the shingles that where used on your pump house are two layered. From what it looks like in your pictures. If they used that shingle to cap your roof it would brake at the pike of your roof and if you thought it looks odd now you would be blown away if it had been done.
Your roofer had to use normal shingle to cap the pump house and picked the same colour that was added to your pump house roof. My father shed that we done had to be done the same way because of that reason. So you have nothing to worry about. I am no expert but like I said that's what we did for my father shed.
