I am trying to replace my old shower pan and have the tile removed, but there just seems to be some sandy looking stuff mixed with glue or something that made it harden, under the tile. Do I need to just dig further down? What is this stuff?

That should be a thinset mortar on top of the concrete floor that is inside the shower pan. If you are planning to remove the shower pan complete... you will need to go about 2-4 inches deeper. Good luck... let us know how you are doing as you go along!!

Once you get it started... comes out nice and easy... usually! Just get a hole started with a hammer and chisel and then should be able to use a crow bar to get under the mortar and pull up and away from pan.

If that seems like it is not going to work, then may need to rent an electric chipping hammer from a rental store. Good luck!

Why are you replacing the shower pan? Do you have a leak or are you just upgrading the shower?

I had water seeping into my closet next to the shower. I actually have everything out now, the pan did come out nice and easy once started, but I did rent a electric hammer drill. It really made taking the tile down easier. I was wondering though if there are any special tricks to laying the tile on the floor. I am going to get a plumber in to put in the shower pan, I think they will put in a fiberglass one, can this be tiled over easily?

Hi... a fiberglass shower base cannot be tiled over... period.

If you want to tile the shower floor you are in need of a mud job and a new shower pan liner or copper pan and new drain.

They do make some nice pre-molded shower floors... but you will not tile over any of them... no need... floor comes as one complete unit (make sure this pre-molded floor gets set in either a structolite perlited gypsum plaster or a modified thinset mortar... no matter who does the job).

BUT if you want to tile, as I said... need custom shower floor.
