How long will my miniture daschund bleed if this is her first time in heat?

The discharge will start to taper off the second week but may continue through the third week becoming more mucous than blood. As she gets into the second week, watch her very carefully. She is not ready to bear a litter, but will do anything to get to a male, ANYTHING! Likewise the males that may already be hanging around. As much as a problem as an unwanted litter is, it isn't the worst thing that can happen. Accidental breeding can leave her infected or injured. If she gets loose and goes looking for a male, she won't be looking for traffic and could easily be killed.

If she makes it through the mess, hassles, and risks this time, I hope you will get her spayed. Let me assure you we have no lack of people breeding mini Dachshunds. What we do have a lack of is homes for them. Check www.petfinders.org. We are slaughtering millions of dogs a year for lack of homes. Please watch her carefully for the next few weeks, and then get her spayed as soon as the vet will do it. Spaying her also reduces the chances of getting cancer
