Hey everybody!
I'm remodeling my bathroom and removed a tile tub and plan to replace it with a cast iron one. The drain has been relocated with the J-bend under the concrete foundation. Do I need a AFR (above floor rough installation) tub or a regular. It's a LHO, 3 wall alcove.

May seem like odd questions... but:

Will you have good access to drain after tub is installed? Are you referring to the tub waste and overflow assembly.. OR, are you asking about tubs that rough above floor..

I do not know of any tubs that rough above the floor any different than any other tubs... SO:

There are tub waste and overflow assemblies that rough above floor... usually used when a joist is in the way of tub waste rough in OR sometimes when drain hard to get at (such as in an underground situation with limited accessability... hmm.. ).

Then, of course, there are normal tub waste and overflow assemblies... but accessability will be paramount.

Anyway... hard for me to be sure how to advise as I am unsure of a few things. Please get back with answers to my questions.

I will have decent access to the drain assembly after the tub is installed... through the wall under a kitchen cabinet and through supply lines. I busted out the cast iron pipes and attached pvc and will have the drain all-ready to hook up to the tub once I slide a tub in. I am trying to buy a tub but some are AFR while others are not. Don't know which kind I need??

I have never installed an above the floor rough tub... never even heard of it (26 years now... )... SO I would figure that if you want to install a cast iron tub and have the deepest tub you can just go with a regular cast iron tub. If you can access drain there is no reason to install anything else anyway!

Of course, there are a country of plumbers on this site so give it a day or two before you decide for final... they may know something I don't. It doesn't happen often... ;) but a few have surprised me with ideas/fixtures, etc. I did not know of. Let's see what happens... I think I am dead on though.

I am trying to buy a tub but some are AFR while others are not. I'm more confused then Massplumber. In over 50 years I've never run across a tub designed for above floor installations. Do you have a link where I can check them out? We have platformed regular tubs and hooked them up but I don't recommend it.
Can you make a tub dap-out, place the trap and raiser in it and install nthye tub in the usual manner? If not then why not? Regards, tom

That will show the AFR tub models

Above floor rough in tub means the tub has a raised bottom,so the drain itself will be off the finished floor,no clearence needed.Only need to have direct hole in floor in line with the overflow.So putting a bath in, say upstairs you could assemble the drain and overflow first and just have a 2 and half in hole in the floor and drop it through. Without this raised bottom you would have to say cut at least a 12 inch square in floor for the drain and overfloow to not hit the floor,but a raised bottom will hold less water
