What happens to a judgement that is more than 20 years old?

If the judgment was not renewed in a timely fashion essentially it does not exist any longer. You might want to check the courthouse where it was filed to see if it is still in force and effect.

To the best of my knowledge in the US the longest time frame is 10 years with another 10 year renewal. If it's more than 20 - and you're sure of that - it's null and void.

As noted the judgement expires and cannot be used to collect on the debt. However it does NOT mean that the debt is voided, just the ability to attach their assets.
