View Full Version : Excessive Shedding?

Our pup (3 yrs old) has begun to shed excessively for our climate. I'm concerned because we are in a northern state and have snow through February at least. Her shedding is similar to what happens to her in warmer months... but this hasn't happened in January before.

She's a short haired mix Beagle/Australian Shepherd. She is an indoor dog, only going out in this weather for potty breaks and limited play time. Her diet is consistent (Purina + treats). Outwardly, she's healthy, and continues to have a full coat, yet the shedding has probably doubled in the last month.

Any ideas?

Learning, usually dogs will "blow their coats" twice a year. It might be more noticeable or heavier since your "pup" has matured into an adult dog. Maybe she is a good barometer for all of us and is telling us that spring is on it's way! I wouldn't mind. We have had a record amount of snowfall where I live. LOL! Seriously though, I don't think this is anything for you to be concerned about health wise. Just give her a good daily brushing. It should subside shortly. If her usual behavior changes in any way, give your vet a call and get her in for a health check. :)

Also, if she is mostly an inside dog, her coat shedding is going to be controlled by the inside temperature and lighting. (I'm pretty sure that shedding depends on the changes in day length, but could be wrong.)

Well, I've learned something from you both, thank you!
